most Christians are individualists with no real experience of community

if you were Christians, you would no longer accumulate. You would share everyhing you had. You would actually love one another. And you would treat each other as if you were family.

last night i watched Fidel. a documentary on a certain you-guess-who cuban leader.
and i was inspired. i admired his defiance, his dedication to a cause.

granted, the show had a bias slant.

nonetheless, i still found myself drawing parallels between fidel and LKY. both are leaders of small tiny nations, both sought a path for independence and for their country people to have a name and recognized voice in the international community. they are legendary for placing their countries on the international stage and having the highest literacy rates. and they're both still in power after how many doggone years (being in cabinet and making new positions for yourself counts!)

but maybe what is striking about both leaders are their awareness of their roles in a larger framework. there's a social awareness that pervades and a premodern notion of public before private.

in short, i guess i am saying that we christians could learn a thing or two from fidel castro. it's an example of an alternative community. and while we need not necessarily emulate all aspects, the point is there is some truth in every cause worth pursuing.
